Sophie and Bean
Watercolor and Pen
5" x 7" or 7" x 5"
2019

I wanted to create a narrative series about a little girl, Sophie, and her imaginary friend, Bean the fox. I wanted to tell their story from the beginning; how they encountered each other in the woods unintentionally, how their friendship grew instantaneously, and how their endless activities and adventures unfolded after that. I wanted this series to bring back fond memories from childhood and remind viewers of the playfulness and the endless possibilities of imagination. I chose to make the landscapes quite barren to communicate that the two friends aren't in a real place in the world, however they still found many activities to participate in and many adventures to unravel. There is never a dull moment for Sophie and Bean. For the last piece, I chose to make Bean's arms transparent and his body fading in the background to convey that although he is just a part of her imagination, the love they share for each other is more real than anything.
